Teen Spectacular
Interview with Kate Jackson

by Sally Dayton
March 1977

"I've changed since I've been working on Charlie's Angels. For the better," Kate giggled. "I hope. First of all," she wiped the teasing smile from her lips, "I've learned that I must take care of myself. I have to go to bed early and do things to keep myself healthy. I stopped smoking and I don't drink. If that sounds dull, believe me, it isn't. I never felt better. Oh," that sweet smile crept back on her lips again, "I do cheat a little that is, on my diet. I like drinking soda pop."

"By the way, I'm having a good time going on about myself. I want to stop right here, though, and say hello to America's wonderful teens through the gracious pages of Teen Spectacular. It's such a treat for me to talk to young people about things that bother them, give them pleasure, scare them, make them happy. I'm really concerned about the well-being of teens. It isn't so long ago that I went through that bewildering period. The important thing to remember is to make the best of those fleeting years. So when I say I learned about taking care of myself, I'm passing on some of these lessons to the teenagers who watch me every week, especially those who write to me about their problems."

"I want you to know I've already planned my future for the next three years. My plans definitely include marriage and children. I'm going to be with Charlie's Angels for at least another year. Then, I must admit, I do have some secret plans. But first, let me tell you that, when I'm 31, I would like to get married. I might sound old-fashioned, but I still believe in marriage, and I want to time everything right. I don't want to make a mess of things and make the man in my future unhappy. Also, I want my kids to have a good up-bringing. I want to be a good mother, and I want my career at the same time. I'm sure it can be done as long as I keep everything in order."

"It feels so good, so natural to be talking about the things most teens think and dream aboutûlike a career, marriage and children. The important thing is to make haste slowly, don't rush into anything without giving every detail your most serious attention."

"Love is lovely, but not to be taken lightly. You know, I lot of girls write to me and ask for my advice on finding a boyfriend. That's a tall order, but I'll try to answer it. It seems to me there are plenty of good boys around. He is out there somewhere and I believe he'll find you if you let him. I don't believe in girls chasing guys. As far as a man in my own life is concerned, I could search for him, but I won't, I want to be found."

"I once had a boyfriend that nobody liked," Kate remembered the incident with a laugh. "My best friend said I would never have Mr. Right until I let go of Mr. Wrong. Okay, friend, Mr. Wrong is out, so where is my Mr. Right?"

"He's looking for you right now," I kidded Kate. "As a matter of fact, I understand you've found each other," I told her, hoping she was ready to make an announcement. She wasn't. You see, Kate wants to be absolutely certain that this time her Mr. Right is really and truly right. It could be a moment's infatuation, something that happens to most of us, no matter our age. When it does happen, the best thing to do is sit back and let nature take its course. It'll peter out if you don't do something like getting married during the heat of an infatuation. That's a bad scene and Kate hopes it never happens to you, or her.

"It takes a lot of discipline to organize your life. For a long time I didn't have much direction in my personal life; now I want to change that and put some structure in it. I'm working toward that goal."

"For now I love doing what I do, but I would like to be on a real live stage. I used to be scared of the theater. I'm so used to being in front of an audience, Bob Hope had me on his Special, and it was live. I told jokes and everyone laughed, thank goodness, but I was still terrified."

"So you see, even an independent girl - and I am an independent thinker and doer - has moments of insecurity. I guess the most independent thing I ever did in my life was leaving my comfortable, loving home and the University of Mississippi. I went to New York City, and believe me, that was rough. I stayed anyway. It wasn't Disneyland; it was real life. I was going to finish at the University and get my degree in history, my grades were good but - well, I wanted to act, so I went to New York to study there. I needed a job, but I did not have any office skill so I got a job modeling bridal gowns on 7th Avenue."

"The important thing is that you must never get discouraged or impatient. Until your ship comes in, as the saying goes, there is much that you can do to keep a roof over your head. I worked at lots of jobs before my big break. I was a tour guide at NBC. I did a terrific job, if I say so myself, and enjoyed taking people through the studios complete with the effects of rain, thunder - you name it. People used to give me tips although they weren't supposed to. I also worked in a ski resort repairing bent nails. Yes, that's right, repairing bent nails."

"To me, the teen years are so important; the time for dreaming and planning and doing and daring ... as I dared when I took my dreams in hand and moved to New York."

That Kate Jackson. She's a real Charlie's Angel. She certainly gave you a lot of food for thought - non-fattening.
